Vegetable Abundance
We have been picking from our garden each week and here is some of the pictures from last week. These zucchinis were huge. I shredded 21cups from these three and 1/2 of another.
We have been getting several cucumbers each week as well. It has been fun to see everything. The kids are waiting anxiously for the carrots to be ready.

Gardening Success and Failure
last Tues. I went to our garden to weed it and found that the majority of the garden didn't sprout. I had some beans and peas, but that was it. I went and bought some more seeds and starts and figured we will try it again. I did plant some tomatoes in containers at our house and they are doing great. I planted eight starts and three did not survive the dramatic temperature changes, but the other five are blossoming and are quite big. Two plants have several tomatoes growing on them. If the rest of the garden fails, at least we will have tomatoes. Two sides of our house have some beautiful rose bushes along them. I have never really done anything with them and they had grown as tall as the house. I decided this spring it was time to prune them. With the help of a dear friend, we chopped the bushes way back. They must have really enjoyed the pruning because they took off and are huge bushes again. The first set of blooms are dropping their petals and some new buds are opening. I love these beautiful blossoms brightening our yard!

Plants Are In!
Well after many hours of work last week we finally finished planting all the plants on Saturday. On the back row we alternated between two varieties of euonymus and a dwarf boxwood shrub. The front row alternated between a red and a yellow barberry shrub. Even though it looks nice now, I think it will be really pretty when the shrubs have grown 2-3 feet tall. We planted these shrubs because since the construction Faith has found the slope the perfect way to run up to the road. Before we had retaining walls that separated our yard from the road and kept Faith down. Once the shrubs have grown in they will provide a nice barrier for her.
Here is a close up of the alternating patterns of plants.
In the center of the two rows of shrubs we planted three daylilies. I can't wait until they poke up through the soil and rock and bloom!
Along the retaining wall be planted creeping phlox. It will be really pretty when it grows together and covers the top of the wall.

So Much To Do, So Little Time
The family worked hard tonight to start working on the front yard. With the wonderful help of "Grandma" Karen and "Grandpa" Dave, we mixed fertilizer, laid out plants, scraped away rock, dug holes, planted shrubs, fed the transplants, put back the rock, and watered each plant. It was a lot of work but we did make a good dent in the work (we still have so much to do). Karen, Jesse, and Faith work on planting a barberry bush.

Plant Picking
Today I spent the morning going around town picking up supplies for our front yard. First I went to Lowes to pick up all the supplies for the widening of the sidewalk. Then it was to Home Depot and D& B to pick up some of the plants. It took two trips to get everything home and now my garage is full of plants. I didn't find a few of the plants we wanted, but we will start planting anyways and hopefully we can find then later. Our plan is to pour the sidewalk and plant tomorrow night with the kids, we will see how much we actually get done!
